An
Unlikely
meeting
Joe and Abbey had no plans to meet the love of their lives that day
In 2011, Joe was living in West Virginia and touring as a lead guitarist and vocalist for a Christian rock band. He was traveling around the country doing worship ministry. Abbey was living in North Carolina and was a college student seeking a degree in women’s ministry. Abbey clocked in at her job at Cracker Barrel, and Joe’s band stopped for lunch. A chance meeting turned into a Facebook message.
In 2026, Joe and Abbey celebrate 14 years of marriage, 2 amazing children, and move to Durban, South Africa, to follow God’s call!
An
Unexpected
Calling
Joe and Abbey had no plans to serve overseas – they simply felt called to the local church.
Life in Texas was everything Abbey and Joe had built and cherished: a vibrant community, fulfilling careers that ignited their passions, and a family life that filled them with immense pride. If anyone had asked, they wouldn’t have changed a single thing. Yet, in the Spring of 2023, an inexplicable restlessness began to stir. It was a bewildering sensation, starting not with a grand vision, but with a humble whisper in prayer: “Lord, do you want us to leave this house?” As their prayers deepened, they sensed the answer stretching far beyond their comfortable home. It grew in scope, prompting questions like, “Leave this city? This country? This continent?”
The journey of seeking intensified over several months, culminating in a providential encounter: a job posting from ABWE for a Media Specialist in Durban, South Africa, perfect for Joe. What was truly astonishing was not just the location, but finding that together, they qualified for an incredible eleven out of fourteen available positions posted at that time! In that moment, the perplexing restlessness didn’t just vanish; it transformed into a deep longing – a compelling desire to make a home in a country they had never even visited.
That longing for an unforeseen home soon led Joe to an essential 24-Hour Demo event at ABWE headquarters, hoping to explore the tangible realities of missions in Durban. It was there, amidst the exploration, that another unexpected divine appointment occurred: Joe met an associate from Beautiful Feet International – a ministry now strategically nested under ABWE’s leadership – who was actively seeking individuals impassioned by birth and crisis care. It was a perfect, divinely tailored fit for Abbey’s gifts and heart. The feeling of “perfect fit” deepened when Joe discovered that this very representative had previously served as a missionary in Durban for eight years, offering invaluable insight and affirmation.
From that moment, the path became clearer. The next crucial step was an exploratory visit to Durban itself, to meet the team on the ground and connect with local leaders, discerning if this truly was the right alignment for everyone involved. To call it merely “a good fit” would be an understatement; it was perfect. God powerfully affirmed their calling at every turn, gently assuaged every lingering fear, and miraculously provided answers to questions they hadn’t even consciously formed yet. In those seventeen transformative days on the field, God flung open the door for a lifetime of impactful work ahead, solidifying their conviction. Since then, with unwavering resolve, Abbey and Joe haven’t looked back.

Our Strategy
Dual Ministry, Unified Impact
Our calling to Durban is unique because it’s a dual-ministry family calling, generating a unified impact that tackles both spiritual deception and practical desperation head-on. We’re not just two individuals pursuing separate passions; we are a “rare dual-ministry family” where Joe’s digital expertise and Abbey’s compassion for vulnerable families converge to form a comprehensive strategy for Gospel saturation in Durban. This interwoven approach means that our efforts are always reinforcing each other, creating a powerful synergy designed to strengthen local churches and reach the lost.
In a city where spiritual confusion thrives, Joe’s media ministry focuses on making “digital truth rise and deception fall” by equipping local churches with modern tools. But this is more than mere technology; it’s making authentic biblical truth findable and understandable. This means empowering pastors and communicators to cut through the noise of false religions and syncretism with clear Gospel messages, making “real churches findable by real seekers.” Joe’s work lays the groundwork, ensuring that when hearts are open, there are clear, accessible pathways to genuine faith.
Simultaneously, Abbey’s Beautiful Feet Ministry builds “life-saving networks” within these very churches. She trains congregations to become crisis pregnancy experts, transforming pastors and lay leaders into compassionate counselors, and equipping church members to create sanctuaries for those in desperate need. This practical demonstration of Christ’s love addresses immediate crises, offering tangible hope and care. The unified impact is evident: Joe’s work brings people to the light of truth, and Abbey’s ministry ensures they find loving, supportive communities ready to embrace them through life’s most challenging moments.
Why Durban? (Understanding the Spiritual Battlefield)
Durban, South Africa, is a city pulsing with life, yet also deeply embroiled in a complicated spiritual battle that defines our calling. This isn’t just about cultural differences; it’s about a pervasive syncretism situation. Imagine a place where “Christian” rituals might involve purchasing goat heads at the market, or where a witch doctor advises people on “Christian radio” about appeasing ancestors before Jesus will listen. There, the Hindu community has even “promoted Jesus to CEO of their god corporation,” inadvertently blurring the lines of biblical truth to an alarming degree. The spiritual landscape is complex, rich with traditional beliefs intertwined with Christian practices, creating a critical need for clarity and Gospel light.
Living amidst such a blend means that many in Durban are searching, but often in places that lead them further from genuine faith. The digital realm, in particular, has become a fertile ground for both truth and tremendous deception. Without intentional effort to counter misinformation and equip local voices, the spiritual fog only thickens. This unique context is precisely why our integrated strategy, emphasizing both digital truth and compassionate care, is so vital.
Our presence in Durban is a direct response to this spiritual reality. We firmly believe that the Gospel is the only true answer to the confusion, despair, and false hope that characterize so much of the city’s spiritual climate. Our ministries are designed to meet people where they are, understanding their unique belief systems and presenting the transformative power of Christ in a way that is both culturally sensitive and biblically faithful.
Our Core Beliefs (Doctrines)
For any mission partnership to be truly fruitful and enduring, a clear alignment in core theological convictions is paramount. We believe this is a “dealbreaker” for good reason, ensuring that we are united in the essential truths of the Gospel, baptism, and the Great Commission. As missionaries, we are sent by our beloved home church, Horizons Church in Lost Creek, WV, and are commissioned by them and The Association of Baptists for World Evangelism (ABWE). We, along with our sending church, have signed a “Sending Church Agreement,” signifying our complete doctrinal alignment with both organizations.
Horizons Church holds firmly to biblical inerrancy, the necessity of personal conversion, believer’s baptism by immersion, and the Great Commission as the marching orders for all believers. Information about Horizons, including our Statement of Faith, can be found here. This foundation shapes every aspect of our ministry and ensures that the message we proclaim in Durban is consistent with the timeless truths of Scripture.
ABWE, as our facilitating organization, is an independent Baptist agency with deep “Fundamentalist” roots. It functions as a “bridge” or service agency for a broad spectrum of conservative, Bible-believing Baptist and “baptistic” churches, including independent, GARBC, Southern Baptist congregations, and more. Their unwavering commitment to biblical inerrancy, believer’s baptism, congregational autonomy, and a church-centric missions approach ensures that our partnership amplifies the Gospel. Their Statement of Faith, which we fully affirm, is available here. This robust theological framework provides essential ecclesiastical credibility and ensures that our efforts are always centered on faithful, church-planting missions.
In summary: we affirm and agree with the above resources. People often ask which ‘flavor’ of Baptist we represent, but our focus is much broader. In South Africa, where ‘Christian’ practitioners often teach that ancestral spirits must be appeased before prayers can reach Jesus, we don’t currently have the luxury of debating secondary traditions. Borrowing from C.S. Lewis, we are far more focused on the ‘hallway’ — the essential truth of Christ as the sole mediator between God and man, than we are about the ‘rooms’ of denominational practice that branch off from the hallway. We are proud to partner with local churches in Durban that occupy those ‘rooms,’ but our shared mission remains the same: ensuring the foundation is built on the finished work of Christ alone, rather than the ‘fringe’ beliefs that distract from the Gospel. We’re Baptists, and we’re missional in our lives and approach.
Equipping Local Leaders for Lasting Change (Multiplication)
Our strategy in Durban is fundamentally built upon the principle of multiplication, not simply addition. We, as ABWE-commissioned missionaries, are fully committed to a “Pauline model” of missions, which means our primary focus is on equipping, empowering, and releasing local leaders and churches to carry the torch of the Gospel within their own communities. We’ve seen firsthand that true, lasting transformation comes from within, as indigenous believers are discipled and trained to reach their own people with cultural insight and long-term commitment that an expatriate missionary cannot fully replicate.
For Joe’s Media Ministry, this translates into hands-on, practical training for pastors, worship leaders, and church communicators. We’re teaching them how to leverage 21st-century digital tools—from creating engaging social media content to developing accessible online platforms—to creatively and effectively share biblical truth in their specific context. The goal is to transfer skills and build capacity, transforming local churches into digitally savvy centers of Gospel proclamation that can reach far beyond their physical walls. This empowerment ensures that the message continues to spread and strengthen, driven by the heart of Durban itself, not Joe or Abbey’s vision.
Similarly, Abbey’s Beautiful Feet Ministry doesn’t establish independent centers; instead, she invests deeply in existing local churches, equipping them to become crisis pregnancy experts. This involves training church members to offer compassionate, biblically sound counseling, providing practical support for vulnerable mothers and families, and helping them establish local networks of care. By empowering these local congregations, we’re not only saving lives and offering hope in critical moments but also strengthening the church’s witness as a beacon of love and practical action in their community. This multiplying model ensures that new “life-saving networks” are organically grown and sustained by those who best understand the local context.
A Collaborative Network
Effective missions are never a solitary endeavor; they thrive on genuine collaboration and interconnectedness. Our approach in Durban is deeply relational, prioritizing the fostering of strong partnerships with local churches, leaders, and like-minded organizations. We believe that by working “Stronger Together,” we can achieve far greater impact than any individual or single ministry could alone, reflecting the unity of the body of Christ. We are not there to impose a foreign agenda but to humbly serve, support, and amplify the incredible Kingdom work already underway in Durban.
Our initial focus involves diligently building trust and rapport with pastors and church leaders throughout the city who share our commitment to biblical truth and compassionate outreach. This means actively listening to their specific needs, understanding the unique challenges they face, and identifying how Joe’s digital expertise and Abbey’s crisis pregnancy training can best serve and strengthen their existing ministries. We see ourselves as catalysts and resources, providing valuable tools and guidance that empower these local leaders to expand their reach and deepen their impact within their congregations and surrounding communities, aligning with our value of “Humble Confidence.”
A quick note: this is, frankly, harder than it sounds. South Africa has historically been incredibly racially divided, and while great work towards unification is underway, we are coming into an atmosphere of historically Zulu churches, historically Indian churches, and historically Afrikaans churches. Each and every culture has their own unique history, strengths, and weaknesses, and then each church further complicates and localizes all of these issues. So when we say our strategy is to empower local leaders, there’s a hidden step of getting to truly and deeply know each leader and each church to identify their needs and help them grow with the resources most applicable and helpful to them.
While our primary collaborative efforts are directed toward empowering local churches, we also remain open to strategic alliances with other mission-aligned organizations on the ground in Durban. This could include local non-governmental organizations dedicated to community welfare or other Christian ministries whose values resonate with ours. By weaving ourselves into this collaborative network, we can pool resources, share insights, and collectively amplify the Gospel’s presence across Durban, creating a more comprehensive tapestry of ministry that effectively addresses the city’s diverse needs.
Building a Lasting Legacy
Our vision for Durban extends far beyond our personal time on the field; it’s about establishing a lasting legacy of Gospel saturation that thrives for generations to come. We are not interested in creating a fleeting spark, but in igniting a self-sustaining fire of faith that is led, nurtured, and multiplied by the people of Durban. Our work is fundamentally about investing in structures, training, and relationships that will endure and continue to bear fruit long after our direct involvement has shifted.
The digital tools Joe implements, for instance, are designed for the long haul. By empowering local communicators, we’re building a foundation of digital fluency that will allow Durban’s churches to adapt and innovate as technology evolves. This isn’t about proprietary software or dependency on our presence, but about equipping local leaders with transferable skills and sustainable platforms. Imagine a future where every significant church in Durban has a vibrant online presence, effectively reaching their communities with truth and attracting seekers through their own indigenous efforts. In other words, Joe isn’t building church websites; he’s training church workers how to reach people through websites, so they can continue building on a strong foundation. This is the enduring legacy of digital innovation we seek.
Similarly, Abbey’s Beautiful Feet Ministry is sowing seeds for deeply rooted, church-led compassion. By training local congregations to address crisis pregnancies themselves, we’re not just offering an immediate solution but cultivating a permanent culture of care within the community. Our vision is for a Durban where every vulnerable woman knows there’s a loving church nearby ready to offer support, guidance, and hope, independently of our direct presence. This creates an enduring network of life-saving care, ensuring that for years to come, the local church remains a beacon of hope and a champion for life in Durban.
Meeting Culture with Truth (Contextualization)
Effective ministry in Durban demands a profound understanding and sensitive engagement with the local contexts, particularly given the breadth of racial and cultural histories, all of which are multiplied by the pervasive “Syncretism Situation.” We recognize that simply delivering a Western-centric message without careful contextualization can be ineffective, or even alienating. Our commitment is to meet Durban where it is, engaging respectfully with its rich culture while uncompromisingly presenting the unchanging truth of the Gospel in a way that truly resonates and transforms.
This means that while Joe equips churches with modern media tools, the content and communication styles are always tailored to each Durban church’s context. He encourages pastors to use digital platforms to address the unique spiritual questions and cultural narratives prevalent in their own specific communities, such as the blend of ancestral worship and Christian practices among Zulu and Xhosa churches, or the blend of Jesus into “one of the gods” prevalent among Indian Christians. The goal is to make biblical clarity louder than confusion in each context, ensuring that the Gospel speaks directly into the lives and specific worldviews of Durban’s people, dismantling deception with culturally intelligible truth.
Abbey’s Beautiful Feet Ministry likewise integrates cultural sensitivity into its training. Understanding the family dynamics, community pressures, and traditional beliefs surrounding pregnancy and family is crucial for effective crisis intervention. She equips local churches not only with counseling skills but also with cultural insights, enabling them to offer biblically sound advice and practical support that is genuinely empathetic and relevant to the women they serve. By empowering local believers to apply Gospel principles within their own cultural framework, we ensure that compassion is delivered in a way that truly honors and impacts the heart of the community.
Financial Integrity and Good Stewardship
Our commitment to reaching Durban is anchored by a deep sense of responsibility and transparent financial stewardship. We understand that our partners are investing not just in us, but in the Kingdom work God is orchestrating through us, and we take that trust incredibly seriously. Our approach to finances is guided by one of ABWE’s core values: “We Share Our Lives and Possessions.” This mindset extends to how we manage every resource entrusted to us.
We are deeply grateful for the many guidances provided by ABWE, who is renowned for its robust financial oversight, ensuring that every donation is processed with integrity and directed according to donor intent. Their rigorous systems and commitment to accountability provide an invaluable layer of security and transparency, streamlining financial operations so we can remain focused on ministry. This partnership allows us to leverage their established infrastructure, guaranteeing that funds are handled professionally and ethically.
Beyond organizational oversight, we are personally committed to living simply and stewarding our resources wisely on the field. This includes careful budgeting, responsible spending, and regular communication with our sending and supporting partners about our financial needs and how funds are being utilized. We believe that demonstrating faithfulness with financial resources is a powerful witness to God’s provision and our dedication to His mission, allowing our partners to give with confidence and joy. To that end, we have publicly listed our missions budget, showing how every incoming dollar is allocated when we are at 100% of our monthly needs.
Sustaining Our Family
Serving on the mission field is a tremendous privilege, but it also comes with unique challenges that require intentional care and support for our entire family. We firmly believe that healthy missionaries are effective missionaries, and therefore, prioritizing our well-being—physically, emotionally, and spiritually—is not a luxury, but a vital component of sustainable, long-term ministry in Durban. Our approach is characterized by “Humble Confidence,” trusting God’s calling yet recognizing our human need for rest, care, and community.
ABWE provides invaluable foundational support that undergirds our family’s well-being. This includes crucial healthcare resources, offering a 24-hour helpline where we can consult with doctors in the States and even have medications ordered locally. Such practical support alleviates significant burdens, allowing us to focus on ministry knowing that our family’s health needs are addressed. They also provide comprehensive training on everything from secure communication methods to cultural adaptation, preparing us for the unique demands of living overseas.
Beyond organizational support, we are intentional about cultivating rhythms of rest, spiritual renewal, and strong family connection. This means prioritizing our marriage, discipling our children, engaging in local fellowship, and maintaining consistent communication with our sending church, Horizons Church. We understand that sustained effectiveness flows from a sustained dependency on Christ and healthy personal habits, ensuring that we remain vibrant witnesses for His glory in Durban for years to come.
